FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about acupuncture at IMMA

Does acupuncture hurt?

Not at all! Your comfort is our top priority. The needles we use are incredibly fine — think hair-thin. You might feel a momentary sensation upon insertion, but it swiftly fades. During treatment, some experience nothing while others feel a gentle tingling. We've welcomed many patients with needle phobias who have been pleasantly surprised by how much they've come to love acupuncture.

What conditions does acupuncture treat?

Research has found evidence for the effectiveness of acupuncture for over 117 conditions. At IMMA, we commonly treat chronic pain, stress and anxiety, fertility concerns, hormone imbalances (PCOS, menopause, thyroid), digestive issues, immune support, complex diseases (cancer care, neurological disorders), and teen health. During your consultation, we'll discuss how acupuncture can specifically help your condition.

How often do I need to come?

The frequency depends on your condition, its severity, and your body's response. Initially, sessions may be recommended weekly or biweekly. For acute pain, treatments may be twice a week for a few weeks until symptoms improve. Think of it like a carefully prescribed course of treatment — each session builds on the last. Your acupuncturist will tailor a plan to your specific needs.

How long is a typical session?

Sessions typically last 40-60 minutes. This includes time for consultation, needle placement, and a relaxing rest period. We never rush — your healing is our priority.

Is acupuncture safe?

Absolutely. Acupuncture is extremely safe when performed by licensed practitioners. We use only sterile, single-use, disposable needles that are opened fresh for each patient. Our practitioners hold advanced degrees and certifications, including doctoral-level training and NCCAOM board certification.

Do you accept insurance?

For acupuncture, we are in-network with BCBS Illinois PPO and out-of-network for Aetna and United. Just because you have a BCBS PPO does not mean you have acupuncture coverage. As a courtesy, we check with your insurance provider to see if you have any coverage for acupuncture treatments. It is our patients' responsibility to know their insurance benefits. We love our patients and want them to be armed with this knowledge.

What should I expect at my first visit?

Your first visit includes a comprehensive health consultation where we discuss your medical history, current concerns, and wellness goals. Then we'll perform your first gentle acupuncture treatment. Wear comfortable, loose clothing and plan for about 60 minutes for your initial visit.

Can I see multiple practitioners?

Yes! Our team collaborates on your care and leaves detailed notes so you can feel confident scheduling with any practitioner. If you do have a preference, we work hard to schedule you with your preferred provider.

How much is a visit?

Your first visit is $155 and follow-up visits are $125.
